More demanding still is the heat. Dry air and direct radiation push thermoregulation to its limits, activating sweat glands, altering plasma volume and challenging autonomic nervous system control of vasodilation and heart rhythm. Instead of the predictable on‑off spikes of a gym circuit, the body faces a continuous systems problem: maintain core temperature, keep blood pressure stable, and move a load across unstable terrain without respite.
Yet the decisive difference is cognitive. A long, monotonous march with no music, no screens and no cool airflow strips away distraction, forcing the prefrontal cortex to confront discomfort, boredom and doubt. Pain signals from joints and soft tissue arrive without filter, and the brain must repeatedly recalibrate perceived exertion against real metabolic capacity. Over time this exposure reshapes central pain modulation and attentional control, building a kind of psychological callus that no short, climate‑controlled workout can easily reproduce.
