Light cheats more than furniture does. A living room repainted in pale tones, with sheer curtains replacing heavy fabric, can make an unchanged window feel almost explosively bright, though the physical amount of daylight entering the room has not increased at all.
The key is reflectance, not romance. Pale paints have a high diffuse reflectance coefficient, meaning a far larger share of each photon that hits the wall is scattered back into the room rather than absorbed as heat. Darker pigments act as sinks, turning daylight into a dead end. With brighter surfaces, every patch of wall becomes a secondary emitter, so a single window behaves like a hub feeding multiple soft sources instead of one harsh beam.
Sheer curtains add a second, quieter trick. By turning the window into a luminous plane, they convert direct solar glare into a broad diffused field, which the human visual system interprets as more generous illumination even when photometric lux levels barely change. Reduced contrast between the window and surrounding walls allows the eye to adapt upward, so details in corners appear clearer and the brain codes the entire space as better lit.
Perception finishes the job. When floors, ceilings and large furnishings shift toward lighter finishes, the increased luminance uniformity calms the constant pupil readjustment that darker schemes demand, freeing the viewer to notice the overall envelope of brightness rather than a single blinding rectangle of sky.
