That ghostly turquoise is less mystery than ruthless physics. The pool at the base of the underground fall carries dissolved calcium carbonate and traces of copper ions, which filter incoming light and bias it toward blue and green wavelengths in a way any spectrometer would quickly confirm.
More unsettling, though, is the living part of the glow. Microbial mats clinging to slick rock surfaces host bioluminescent bacteria whose luciferase enzymes convert chemical energy into cold light, so the cave keeps a low electric hum of color even when outside light sources fade to almost nothing. Short beams from headlamps hit suspended droplets and fine mist, and Mie scattering sends light sideways, filling the chamber with a diffuse wash that seems to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.
What feels expansive in that tight corridor is a perceptual hack, not sorcery. With clear sightlines erased by spray, and Rayleigh scattering shifting the faintest photons toward blue, the brain loses depth cues and inflates the space, reading the glowing waterfall as distant, like a horizon. The result is a cramped volume that performs, optically, like an alien canyon.
