When shorelines are armored with seawalls and condos, nesting habitat shrinks; when artificial lighting floods the surf, adults abort nesting and hatchlings misorient inland, increasing mortality from exhaustion and road traffic.
What looks like progress from a balcony is, from the waterline, a slow asphyxiation. Beach nourishment and dredging alter sediment grain size and slope, disrupting the thermal profile that determines sex through temperature-dependent sex determination, while coastal noise and human presence push turtles to suboptimal sites where repeated failed crawls drain energy and extend time spent near the surface in busy boating corridors. Propeller strikes, entanglement in fishing gear and collision with personal watercraft then turn a compromised ascent for air into a fatal event. On a crowded coast, even an animal built to breathe the sea can run out of safe breaths.
