That scarlet flash is not a mistake. It is a calculated biological gamble that often pays off. In male northern cardinals, feather color is tightly linked to internal condition, including immune function and oxidative stress control, so only individuals in strong shape can afford to glow that bright.
Predation risk, despite appearances, is not mainly about color. Many common predators key on movement, silhouette and sound, meaning a motionless cardinal in dense shrubs is not automatically doomed by hue alone. What the red does change, dramatically, is social economics inside the species; females show strong mate choice for males with higher chroma, and rivals back off more readily from intensely colored territory holders.
The biology under the paint is even harsher. Those red tones come from carotenoids, dietary pigments that also feed antioxidant pathways and support immune responses. When a male routes a large share of carotenoids into feather keratin, it is broadcasting a costly signal: it has enough nutrient intake and physiological efficiency to spare resources for display without compromising basic maintenance, a classic Zahavi-style handicap signal.
So the apparent bullseye becomes a filter. Duller males gain a small camouflage benefit but lose mating opportunities and territorial leverage, while the brightest males accept marginally higher visibility to predators in exchange for disproportionate reproductive success.
