Dusk makes the tree look almost staged. One flowering crown, one strip of sky, a clean dark border of roofs and wires; the scene behaves like a perfectly drawn box while every leaf and petal inside it misbehaves. That tension, between obedient frame and unruly interior, is not an artistic coincidence but a direct probe of how the visual cortex handles overload under tight spatial constraints.
What seems effortless is in fact ruthless selection. First the retina and lateral geniculate nucleus throw away swaths of spectral nuance and micro-contrast, sharpening only edges that define the trunk, the canopy rim, the horizon line. Then orientation-selective columns in primary visual cortex exaggerate those borders further, so the rectangular window of the scene remains rock solid while the interior dissolves into statistical texture. You do not store each blossom; you store a rule set. A probabilistic sketch. The brain is running lossy compression in real time.
The surprise is that discipline comes last, not first. Mid-level systems driven by Gestalt grouping and figure–ground segregation retro-fit order onto the noisy bloom, promoting one tree as figure and demoting the rest to background noise, even though the photons arriving at the cornea do not respect that hierarchy at all. Working memory then bites off only what that hierarchy allows, locking the frame and a few anchor clusters of light while discarding the exact pattern of petals and gaps. A photographer might call it composition. A neuroscientist would call it constrained encoding of high-entropy input within a low-dimensional representational space. The eye roams, the mind edits, the frame holds.
