Those ears are not cute extras; they are survival hardware. On bare sand, where cover is rare, the desert cottontail turns stillness into a listening stance, its tall pinnae acting like paired acoustic antennas that sweep the air without moving the body.
This rabbit wins by treating sound as geometry. Each ear rotates on its own cartilage hinge, changing shape and angle to capture pressure waves from slightly different azimuths, then feeding them to the middle ear and cochlea, which split the signal by frequency and intensity. Tiny timing gaps between left and right input, known as interaural time differences, give the brain a built‑in range finder. At the same time, subtle changes in sound spectrum, shaped by the ridges of the pinna, tell the auditory cortex whether a threat sits high, low, ahead, or behind.
Stillness, oddly, makes the map sharper. With muscles quiet and footfalls absent, background self‑noise drops, so even a faint wingbeat or a snake’s scrape stands out against the thermal wind. The rabbit may barely shift its ears, yet that minimal motion sweeps a wide arc of open ground, turning exposed space into an early warning field where the first clue of danger is not seen, but heard.
