What makes that year different is not just the chaos but its coherence. Global mean surface temperature brushed the upper edge of previous records, while atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane hit new peaks, tightening radiative forcing like an over-wound spring. Sea-surface anomalies in key basins fed marine heatwaves, bleaching coral and scrambling fisheries, even as cryosphere losses at high latitudes distorted jet stream patterns and locked in blocking highs over land.
Harsh as it was, researchers now argue it was less an exception than an early sample of a new normal. Biodiversity surveys reported mass mortality events for birds, bats and marine mammals during compound heat and smoke episodes, exposing how physiological thresholds and habitat fragmentation interact under climate stress. Earth system modellers have since lifted that year’s atmospheric composition, sea-surface fields and soil-moisture deficits and embedded them in ensemble simulations, using it as a reference scenario for mid-century risk: not to dramatise the future, but because the planet has already shown how quickly it can compress several decades of projected change into a single, unnervingly instructive year.
