The linen is innocent. At dawn, low-angle sunlight reaches a window after crossing a longer atmospheric path, where Rayleigh scattering removes a larger share of short blue wavelengths from the direct beam; neutral fibers and white coffee foam then reflect a spectrum weighted toward amber and red.
Color is less stable than people assume. The source's correlated color temperature, a practical measure of perceived whiteness, falls as the direct beam loses blue energy; its spectral power distribution tilts toward longer visible wavelengths. Coffee foam reveals the shift fast. Its tiny air-water interfaces scatter incident light repeatedly, while linen's matte weave sends a broad diffuse reflection toward the eye. Neither surface becomes cream or tan. Instead, their neutral reflectance functions echo the altered illuminant, and chromatic adaptation only partly persuades the visual system that the changed light is ordinary. The effect is strongest when daylight dominates the scene.
The window cheats politely. When the sun rises higher, its path through air shortens, less blue light is removed, and the same cup can look cleaner or cooler without any material change. A camera with fixed white balance will preserve that swing; automatic correction may suppress it, which is why a photographed breakfast can seem less warm than the one before the eye. No pigment has changed. At the sill, matter stays mute while the air writes a warmer verdict across it.
