Those outsized jackrabbit ears are not decoration. They are survival hardware. Spreading like thin sails, each ear exposes a dense sheet of pinna skin packed with blood vessels to moving air, turning the entire surface into a biological heat sink. When body temperature rises, arterioles in this vascular network dilate, boosting blood flow and convective heat loss while the rabbit stays planted on open ground.
More radical still is what those ears do for awareness. By rotating independently, they create a shifting acoustic field of view far wider than the eyes can manage, using sound localization and interaural time differences to flag the faintest rustle of a snake or coyote at distance. Tiny muscles adjust ear angle and stiffness, tuning sensitivity like a directional microphone array that runs silently and continuously.
The trade-off is obvious. Big ears invite predators. Yet the combined package of thermoregulation and early-warning sensing lets the jackrabbit leverage open terrain instead of shade, cooling on the breeze while detecting motion long before a stalker closes the gap.
