Harsh backlight is ruthless to cream fabric in snow. One blast of high-intensity light, and reflectance values between coat and ground collapse into the same narrow band on the sensor or on the retina, a classic case of luminance compression that makes clothing and background share a single visual register.
Yet the eye still insists there is a body there. Edge detection in the visual cortex hunts for discontinuities in spatial frequency, not just color or brightness, so a woolen nap, a quilted panel, or a matte parka face can break the field of white even when chroma nearly disappears. Thin shadows cast by seams create micro-contrasts the brain stitches into a border.
Boots do even heavier lifting. A darker shaft against snow kicks in simultaneous contrast, giving the lower body an anchor that tells the brain where legs must be, while layered hems and overlapping garments introduce occlusion cues that depth perception algorithms inside the brain treat as hard evidence of volume. The outfit almost vanishes, but its silhouette stays stubbornly legible.
