Stillness is often misread. Under a wash of room light, a rabbit can sit with its pinnae raised and its eyes open, presenting the domestic portrait of ease; yet those upright ears are movable collectors, sampling slight shifts in sound pressure while the visual field stays exposed. The body looks settled. A quiet animal can be conducting a search, not surrendering to ease.
The pose is defensive. Rabbits use the external ear, or pinna, to direct sound toward the ear canal, and independent ear movement can assist auditory localization before the body changes position, allowing attention to sweep without the conspicuous cost of a turn or hop. Eyes add their warning. Their laterally placed eyes support a broad visual field, which makes open eyes useful during watchfulness but insufficient as a verdict on mood. This is active sensing.
That ambiguity matters. Not in stillness, but in the pattern around it, lies the better account: a prey animal may freeze while its autonomic nervous system remains engaged, with sympathetic arousal priming attention and muscle response if a novel sound or movement crosses its threshold. Panic is not required. Ear rotation, body tension, breathing, hiding behavior, and surrounding noise offer stronger clues than one composed-looking face. They share one outline.
