The tail refuses invisibility. Against snow, a stoat's white body can dissolve into ground cover, while the black terminal tuft remains a conspicuous punctuation mark. That apparent design error is not easily dismissed: the animal's winter pelage is produced by a seasonal molt, yet the tail tip retains eumelanin rather than joining the white coat.
The sensible answer is compromise, not perfection. One hypothesis holds that the dark flag can draw a pursuing predator toward the tail, shifting an attack away from the torso through predator deflection. It is no guarantee. A fox or raptor can also use that contrast to hold the fleeing animal in view, particularly when its body breaks from cover. Direct field tests are scarce. Meanwhile, photoperiod helps govern the molt, and melanogenesis regulates pigment deposition; a persistent tip may reflect developmental constraint as much as an advantage.
The real lesson is harsher. Camouflage is not an on-off switch but a bargain made under pressure, where concealment of the torso may coexist with a visible moving marker. The black tip survives in summer too, suggesting its history is not merely a winter accident. Some biologists also consider visual signaling, although evidence for any single function remains thin. In the white field, the stoat carries its small ink mark: not an answer, but a price.
