Sunset makes white cats look almost engineered, yet that glow signals a design flaw. Their fur acts like a bright screen, scattering visible light through a process called Mie scattering, so every shaft of low, warm sunlight bounces off the pale coat and exaggerates edges, muscles, whiskers. The cat looks sculpted, even metallic. The physics flatters the eye, not the skin underneath.
The harsh truth is that white fur usually means low melanin in the epidermis, and that is a bad trade. Melanin absorbs and dissipates ultraviolet photons before they can snap DNA strands or damage keratinocytes. Dark-coated cats carry more of this natural filter around hair follicles and in exposed skin on ears and nose. White cats, especially those with pink, unpigmented pinnae and eyelids, sit much closer to the danger line for actinic damage, solar dermatitis and squamous cell carcinoma.
So the cat that gleams in an orange window frame is often the one most at risk. Visible light that makes the coat shine is harmless; the ultraviolet wavelengths that ride with it are not, and pale skin lets more of them through. Dermatology guidelines now treat ear-tip lesions in white cats almost as a textbook warning: beauty in the golden hour, pathology in the ultraviolet that came with it.
