In the lateral geniculate nucleus and primary visual cortex, inhibitory interneurons and feature detectors fight for bandwidth, while frontoparietal networks bias the contest toward what matters for action, not beauty. The dog’s circuits weight motion, scent cues, and potential prey, using top‑down modulation to amplify a tiny subset of incoming signals and suppress the rest below the threshold of conscious scene building.
Perception, then, is less a camera and more a ruthless compression algorithm. Visual cortex and superior colliculus run something close to sparse coding, discarding redundant petals so motor systems stay fast and metabolic costs stay low.
