Soft fur lies to people; it tells almost nothing about the cat inside. In the first weeks, what really matters is touch, sound, light, and scent, entering a nervous system in rapid revision. During this sensitive period, synaptic pruning and neuroplasticity run at full power, strengthening circuits that link human contact, novelty, and safety.
The sharper claim from behavior research is blunt: daily gentle handling predicts sociability far better than any tabby swirl. Repeated low-threat exposure dampens hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal stress responses, so the adult cat approaches instead of avoids. Sparse handling, or chaotic rough play, biases the same endocrine machinery toward vigilance, hiding, and fear-based aggression.
Coat pattern genes, by contrast, mostly idle on the surface. They guide melanocyte migration and pigment distribution in the skin, not synapse density in the amygdala or sensory cortex. People project temperament onto spots and stripes. The data keep pointing back to quieter forces: who touched the kitten, how often, and what the world looked like while its circuits were still wet clay.
