Color, for a rabbit, is almost a luxury. In open spring woods, survival depends less on reading the blossom palette than on spotting the tiniest flicker against it, and the animal’s entire visual system is wired to treat motion as the only headline that matters.
Wide eyes on the sides of the head give the rabbit close to all‑around coverage, but at a cost: less depth, less fine detail, fewer cues about those pinks and whites humans celebrate. Instead, its retina loads up on photoreceptors tuned for low contrast and movement, with ganglion cells arranged to flag change across the visual field rather than to resolve crisp shapes. What looks to us like a rich, layered forest scene collapses for the rabbit into a continuous threat monitor in which still objects fade into background noise.
Speed, not nuance, is its strategy. Neural circuits from retina to superior colliculus are biased for rapid processing, trading color discrimination for millisecond gains in reaction time, and those gains decide whether a shadow becomes a strike. Even grazing in the open, the rabbit keeps its head bobbing, effectively performing its own version of motion parallax to refresh edges and contours that static vision might miss. The blossoms stay vague, almost anonymous, while any moving silhouette, no matter how small, explodes into priority.
