The contest begins before the shutter moves: auroral emission supplies photons, while clouds scatter, absorb, and erase the contrast that makes those photons legible.
Price is the wrong boss. A large sensor, fast lens, and disciplined exposure can widen the margin, but they cannot manufacture photon flux when the sky is opaque. Think of photon flux as network bandwidth: a costly processor cannot download a file through a severed cable. In camera terms, more arriving light raises the signal-to-noise ratio before sensor read noise and high ISO amplification turn faint structures into grit. Manual focus, stable support, and an exposure short enough to preserve moving arcs matter more than a prestige badge.
Timing is the real upgrade. Aurora activity can intensify or fade while a forecast remains broadly favorable, so patient monitoring has a return that hardware shopping cannot match. A modest body beneath transparent skies records the atmospheric physics actually present; an expensive body beneath clouds records mostly darkness. As computational photography folds denoising and motion estimation into capture, the gap between budget gear and premium gear may shrink further. Weather will remain outside the algorithm.
