A sheer curtain is a better warmth cue than most people admit: it catches daylight, turns it into a pale wash, and erases the hard border between window and wall. No degree is added. Yet the room feels less exposed, because filtered light reduces glare and gives the eye a gentler field in which to settle.
The effect is real, though it is not a hidden heater. Thermal comfort is assembled from air temperature, mean radiant temperature, humidity, air movement, clothing, and expectation. When those measures remain steady, diffuse illumination and soft surfaces can still alter cross-modal perception: the eye reads enclosure, reduced glare, and tactile possibility, then lends that reading to the body's sense of ease.
Natural layers beat polished sparseness because they make emptiness seem less hostile. Linen, wood grain, wool, and woven fibers introduce low-contrast variation; their roughness suggests touch, while absorbent surfaces can soften reverberation. The result is not heat but shelter. A room that appears to hold light, sound, and the body more kindly can persuade its occupant to linger.
The deeper lesson is quietly strange: heat can be measured at the vent, while warmth begins, almost invisibly, at the window.
