That is the trick. In the ventral stream, color and object identity are parsed, while the dorsal stream tracks spatial relations and movement; neither circuit shuts down, but both can work without the sharp competition imposed by traffic, screens, or social threat. Attention loosens now. Researchers call a related effect soft fascination: stimuli hold awareness lightly, leaving directed attention less taxed. The body follows suit. When a setting feels safe and legible, parasympathetic activity may gain ground over sympathetic arousal, slowing the body even as sensory computation continues and reducing the pressure to scan for what might go wrong.
Rest, then, is selective. It is not the absence of neural labor but a shift in what that labor costs: less vigilance, fewer competing goals, and a gentler handoff to the default mode network. Dusk keeps computing. At the horizon, a brain can remain awake to the world without being drafted by it.
