Turquoise begins at the bottom. Across a reef flat, a skin of water lies over pale sand and coral, and that narrow gap turns ordinary sunlight into the color travelers mistake for a lagoon. The effect is not paint. It is radiative transfer: light enters, scatters, reflects from the substrate, and returns through a short optical path.
The popular picture is backward. A brighter blue does not necessarily announce a deep basin; it can signal water so shallow that the seafloor is doing much of the visual work. Bathymetry rules the view. As depth increases, red and yellow wavelengths are absorbed over longer paths, while blue light persists, yet the pale bottom contributes less reflection and the water takes on a denser, darker cast. A few inches matter.
The fragility matters most. Tides, waves, sediment, bleaching, and a passing cloud can alter the apparent hue because a reef flat is an exposed optical system, not a permanent pool of color. The postcard lies politely. What looks like a boundless blue hollow may be ankle-deep water stretched across limestone and living coral. At low tide, the illusion can nearly vanish, leaving light, rock, and a question about how much beauty depends on thinness.
