That rabbit on bare stone is not being reckless at all. At sunrise, rock sheds stored heat by rapid infrared radiation while the surrounding air and brush stay relatively cool, so the animal can dump excess body heat through conduction and convection without sprinting, which would trigger metabolic overheating and force risky movement across open ground.
Predators are actually at a disadvantage in that quiet moment. Many desert hunters rely on motion detection and edge contrast in their visual cortex, so a motionless body on a uniform rock surface generates fewer salient visual cues than a twitching form in broken brush that creates parallax and flicker. With fur matching the stone’s reflectance spectrum and the sun sitting low, the rabbit’s outline merges with rock shadows, reducing visual acuity for both raptors and ground carnivores scanning from distance.
Vigilance works better from that perch as well. Elevation, even by the height of a rock, expands the animal’s visual field and lowers occlusion angles, giving earlier warning of approach and more time to launch a straight-line escape, a behavior shaped by predator–prey game theory models that favor early detection over deep concealment. On the rock, the rabbit trades the illusion of cover for a thermal sink, a cleaner background, and a head start.
