That faint onshore breeze is far less weak than it looks. Just above the dunes, the same flow is compressed, bent upward by cliffs and thermal gradients, forming a hidden escalator of rising air. This is classic orographic lift and it transforms lazy beach wind into a continuous vertical feed for a fabric wing.
The trick is simple, but not easy. Stay inside that rising band. A paraglider flies parallel to the cliff, holding a shallow angle, trading forward speed for aerodynamic lift from its airfoil profile. Five words matter here. Lift must exceed total weight. As long as the upward component of airspeed plus wind matches sink rate, the wing hangs there, apparently motionless over rock and surf.
Open water looks worse, yet often works better. Over cooler sea, friction is low and wind shear sharpens; a few meters up, velocity can double while the surface still feels mild. That gradient, combined with small coastal thermals and dynamic soaring along invisible shear layers, lets pilots stitch gentle gusts into hours of sustained flight above empty ocean.
