Selective attention behaves like that filter: it drops low-value traffic before bandwidth is consumed, while working memory retains material tied to a chosen task. Dopamine does not simply supply willpower; it helps assign salience, making some cues harder to ignore than others. This is neural triage, not heroic strain.
The larger implication is uncomfortable. Screens and alerts profit when every cue asks for entry, but a mind that admits everything cannot select anything. The result is not emptiness. It is a narrower field of options in which response becomes chosen rather than reactive. As brain-computer interfaces, adaptive software, and ambient sensors press closer to perception, systems that preserve thalamic gating and protect working memory will become cognitive infrastructure. The contest will not reward maximal stimulation. It will reward the clean exclusion that lets one act occur.
