The real marvel is not height but contact. Sunlight catches a seam between two dressed stones, so fine that it reads as a line rather than a gap; beneath it, gravity presses each course harder into its neighbor. No paste holds this.
These monuments were less piles of rock than calculated compression machines. Builders quarried workable stone, then dressed beds and joints with patient accuracy, using rebates, tongues, sockets, and occasional mortise-and-tenon links to resist sideways drift. Weight did the rest. A block above delivered a compressive load; friction at the interface opposed sliding, while the load path carried force downward through walls, piers, and plinths. In towers formed by corbelling, each projecting course was balanced by the mass behind it, not suspended by a hidden adhesive.
The trick, then, was disciplined geometry, not lost magic. Dry masonry rewards exactness and punishes error: an uneven bearing surface concentrates stress, while a well-seated block distributes it. Some sites also employed metal cramps or dowels, and local practice varied, but mortar-free joints could remain secure when drainage, roof overhangs, and continued compression kept water and movement from opening them. Stone, given a precise neighbor, becomes its own argument; the silence in the joint is what has lasted.
