The sea is not turning gold; it is staging a precise optical theft, as a low sun sends oblique light across ripples whose shifting faces momentarily aim that light at an observer. It looks expensive. Yet the pigment remains absent, and the apparent metal exists only where geometry permits the return.
The usual explanation is too sentimental. Near the horizon, a long atmospheric path scatters shorter blue wavelengths more strongly through Rayleigh scattering, while aerosols can further reshape the incoming spectrum; what reaches the water often carries a warmer cast. Physics does the selling. Fresnel reflectance rises at grazing angles, so water behaves less like a transparent volume and more like a field of flashing mirrors. Each capillary wave supplies a new microfacet, briefly satisfying the angle required for specular reflection before motion breaks it.
Wet sand makes the illusion more convincing, not more mysterious. A thin surface film smooths portions of the beach, producing broad reflections beside the broken glints of the sea; darker saturated grains heighten the contrast and make bright streaks seem richer. Nothing has transmuted. No mineral deposit has surfaced, and no chemical change is needed. The eye gathers these transient returns into a single lavish surface, although every bright shard belongs to a different slope, a different instant, and the same declining sun. Gold, here, is a condition of looking.
