It is not magic, but optical accounting: yellow paint creates no photons, yet a light tint with a high light reflectance value returns more incident visible radiation than a dark finish, lifting perceived luminance across the room.
The bolder argument is psychological. Warm hues often register as sunlit under identical illuminance because color perception is relational, not a meter reading. Through chromatic adaptation, the visual system recalibrates to ambient conditions; beside pale surfaces, shadows can seem less heavy and corners less distant. Context rules. That response also varies with surrounding colors, material texture, and visual expectations, which is why swatches viewed alone routinely mislead. A deep mustard may absorb far more light, while a glossy coating can replace diffuse reflection with glare.
Designers should quit treating yellow as a counterfeit window. It works best as a multiplier. Pair a restrained yellow with adequate daylight or well-chosen electric lighting, then judge the result through correlated color temperature, surface finish, and daylight distribution. Window orientation and lamp placement still set the ceiling. Color cannot overrule physics. Paint cannot repair poor fenestration. It can, however, make available light feel more generous, while its cultural links to warmth and morning sharpen the room's emotional charge. The return is felt rather than measured in watts. When the light recedes, the wall keeps a small argument with the dark.
