Human cone cells respond nonlinearly; the L and M cones overlap so strongly that a small spectral tilt toward long wavelengths can exaggerate perceived saturation in violet edges. Against a darkening background, retinal contrast gain and color constancy recalibration kick in, enhancing local chroma around lilac clusters while suppressing the now‑gray sky and foliage.
Photography quietly confirms this bias. Spectroradiometer readings show that twilight often narrows the effective illumination band, trimming greens while keeping enough blue and red for petals rich in anthocyanin pigments to bounce complex purples back at you. The chemistry stays fixed in those blossoms. The atmosphere and your visual cortex do the editing.
