A garden wall lies. Or, more precisely, it reports only part of the truth that light hands it. A single lantern sends out rays in straight lines, and when a child stands close to that light, geometry takes over. His small body blocks a wide cone of photons. The wall records that absence as a huge outline, stretched and distorted by the angle between light, boy and stone.
The unsettling part is not the physics. It is the brain. Human visual cortex and the process called shape constancy rush to fit that jagged outline into a known template. Long arms, raised fingers, a tilted head; under oblique projection they fuse into a lupine profile. The body has not grown. The luminous flux has not changed. Yet perception, driven by pattern recognition and pareidolia, quietly rewrites scale and species.
This is not childish fantasy so much as standard equipment of human vision. Projective geometry turns centimeters into apparent meters, while neural circuitry turns irregular silhouettes into predators. A lantern, a wall, a boy. The physics stays indifferent, but the mind, staring at the same light, walks away convinced it has seen a wolf.
