Yet in that stability hides a trade. Once the habit loop locks into the basal ganglia, the prefrontal cortex outsources control, and behavior runs on procedural memory rather than active choice, which means the routine no longer asks who you are, only what you repeat. Motivation theory calls this a shift from intrinsic goal pursuit toward automatic cue response, with dopamine firing at the sight of the mug, not at the prospect of hard work.
So the ritual that once expressed identity can start to replace it. Self-discrepancy theory suggests that a sense of self needs mismatch, stretch, small frictions to stay vivid, but over-optimized mornings strip away variability, and the prediction error signals that normally reshape values stay muted, which lets a thin, efficient version of you harden while the older, more ambitious self becomes harder to recall.
